What this test measures

A Basic Metabolic Panel (BMP) is a blood test that measures eight different substances in the blood and provides important information about the body's fluid balance, metabolism (the process the body uses to make energy from food), and how well the kidneys are working. This comprehensive screening is often used during routine checkups to evaluate overall health status.

The BMP provides information about metabolism (energy use), kidney function, electrolyte balance, and blood sugar levels. Electrolytes help regulate fluid balance, nerve signaling, muscle function, and acid-base balance in the body, which is important for maintaining the body's normal pH levels. Healthcare providers frequently order this test to screen for various health conditions, monitor existing medical issues, or assess how well treatments are working.

What's included

Glucose (blood sugar)
Blood Urea Nitrogen (BUN)
Creatinine
BUN/Creatinine Ratio
Sodium
Potassium
Chloride
Carbon Dioxide (CO2)

Who should consider this test

You might consider this test if you are experiencing any of the following:

  • Individuals having routine health screenings or annual wellness exams
  • Those with symptoms such as fatigue, confusion, dehydration, muscle weakness, or frequent urination
  • Patients taking medications that may affect kidney or electrolyte levels, such as diuretics or blood pressure medications
  • People with diabetes who need regular monitoring of blood sugar levels
  • Individuals with kidney disease, high blood pressure, or other chronic conditions requiring metabolic monitoring
  • Those experiencing general symptoms that could indicate metabolic disorders or electrolyte imbalances

What to expect

Preparation

Fasting for 8-12 hours before the test is typically required for accurate glucose measurements. This means not eating or drinking anything except water during this period. Patients should continue taking prescribed medications unless specifically instructed otherwise by their healthcare provider.

Sample Type

A small blood sample is collected from a vein in the arm using a standard needle and collection tube. The procedure is quick and routine.

Collection

A healthcare professional will clean the arm area, insert a needle to draw blood into collection tubes, and apply a bandage. The entire process typically takes just a few minutes with minimal discomfort.

Turnaround

Results are usually available within 1-3 business days after sample collection. Some laboratories may provide results as quickly as 24-48 hours.

Understanding your results

Each measurement in the panel will include a reference range indicating the typical values expected for healthy individuals. If one BMP result is abnormal, it doesn't necessarily mean there is a medical condition, as other factors like foods eaten, certain medications and health conditions can affect test results. Healthcare providers interpret results within the context of symptoms, medical history, and other diagnostic information.

PopulationReference RangeNotes
AdultsGlucose: 74-99 mg/dL, Calcium: 8.5-10.2 mg/dL, BUN: 7-21 mg/dLReference ranges may vary slightly between laboratories

Reference ranges shown are general guidelines. Your lab report will include the specific reference range used by the laboratory that processed your sample, which is the authoritative range for interpreting your results.

What does a “Low” result mean?

Low results can also indicate health concerns that need attention. Hypoglycemia is less frequently observed but may result from conditions such as insulinoma, hypopituitarism or insulin-induced hypoglycemia. Low electrolyte levels might suggest dehydration, certain medications effects, or underlying conditions affecting fluid and mineral balance. Additional testing may be needed to determine the underlying cause of abnormal results.

What does a “High” result mean?

Elevated results may indicate various conditions depending on which marker is affected. High glucose levels may be a sign of diabetes, while high levels of BUN and creatinine could mean the kidneys aren't working well. If calcium is high, there might be a liver, kidney, or thyroid problem. Abnormal electrolyte levels may suggest dehydration, kidney disease, or other metabolic disorders that require further evaluation.
